Design

McCall's Pattern 4995 pairs a sleeveless sheath with a short, boxy jacket. The dress has a scoop neckline and a bodice that blouses softly over the waist, held in place by an inside belt and a grosgrain waistline stay, above a slim skirt with a pleat at the back. It closes with a left side zipper placket, and View A adds an applied ribbon across the bodice. The open-front box jacket has three-quarter sleeves cut in one with the body and can be made with a round collar (View A) or without (View B), its front edges trimmed in ribbon or braid. A ¾-inch buckled belt completes the look. In size 16 the jacket measures about 18¾ inches from the back of the neck and the skirt about 49½ inches around the hem. McCall's suggested linen, denim, synthetic suitings, shantung, printed silk or cotton, faille, and sharkskin.

A Moment in Fashion History

By 1959 the matched dress and jacket had become a mainstay of the well-dressed woman's wardrobe, and the short, boxy jacket worn over a slim sleeveless dress was moving to the center of fashion. McCall's Pattern 4995 shows that look forming: the bloused bodice softens the line of the sheath beneath, and the collarless, ribbon-trimmed jacket anticipates the clean, cropped jackets that would define polished dressing in the early 1960s.
