Design
Pattern 9510 joins a slightly flared skirt to the bodice at an Empire line, closing at the front with either a single button or a tied bow. A large shaped collar sits away from the neckline for a soft, open finish. The sleeve may be three-quarter length with a turned cuff, or the dress may be made sleeveless entirely. Eight pattern pieces make up this "Very Easy to Make" design.
A Moment in Fashion History
Maternity patterns of the late 1950s increasingly borrowed the Empire silhouette's gentle, waist-skimming line, disguising a growing figure while still following the decade's fuller-skirted fashion silhouette. Vogue's envelope art for 9510 shows the design in both a soft floral print and a solid forest green, each finished with the same away-from-neckline collar that gave the dress its distinctive, softly framed neckline.
Illustration
The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Vogue pattern envelope.
