Design

All four aprons are gathered onto a waistband with ties and cut from McCall's Instant Cut pieces, with matching potholders to complete each set. View A, in peach, carries appliquéd flowers in shocking pink, gold, and red with green bias-tape stems, plus a pair of quilted mitts, one buttoned onto the waistband for decoration. View B is an 18" apron in single-edge border print with three pockets across a banded hem and two round potholders. View C uses the same border print with bias-trimmed plunge pockets. View D, 19½" long, sets a print panel with a pocket into a plain apron, with square potholders to match. Views A and C can be made in two lengths, about 19" to 21". Eight pieces.

A Moment in Fashion History

McCall's pitched this envelope directly at gift-making and church and school bazaars, promising "4 easy-to-make Instant Cut Aprons with Potholders to match." By the mid-1960s the half apron had become as much a hostess accessory and handmade gift as a kitchen necessity, and pattern companies answered with quick, simplified designs. Single-edge border prints, with their large flowers running along one selvage, were made for exactly this kind of apron, and the oversized appliqué blossoms on View A point toward the bold graphic florals of the later sixties.

Connections

This pattern is part of our exhibit, Kitschy Kitchen -- McCall Edition, a growing collection celebrating the whimsical, decorative side of kitchen textiles. While I love everything about McCall, it must be said, "McCall Makes the Cutest Aprons!"
