Design

Vogue 8438 gives its six-gored skirt real movement through flare and side-front seam pockets, joining a bodice defined by a sectional dropped-shoulder yoke finished with a decorative lapped seam. A high bias roll collar adds soft structure at the neckline, while push-up three-quarter sleeves or an above-elbow length round out the design. A versatile pattern suited to wool crepe, flannel, shantung, or a lightweight linen.

A Moment in Fashion History

By 1954, dropped-shoulder yokes and bias-cut collar details reflected a growing interest in structural seaming as a design feature in its own right, moving construction lines from the interior of the garment onto its surface as visible, considered detail — a hallmark of mid-1950s dressmaking sophistication.
