Design

Vogue 7966 joins a gently gored skirt to a double-breasted bodice at the natural waistline, with the wrap-style front giving both views a soft, crossed line at the bust. The low, shaped V-neckline and short kimono sleeves keep the upper body unfussy, leaving the skirt's gores to do the work of movement and shape. View A closes with a slim self-fabric tie sash, while View B is finished with a separate belt worn over the double-breasted front. The gored construction — skirt front, skirt side front, skirt side back, and skirt back all cut as separate panels — gives a controlled fullness well suited to firmer dress fabrics.

A Moment in Fashion History

By 1953, the full-skirted, defined-waist silhouette popularized in the years just after the war had settled into the everyday wardrobe rather than remaining a special-occasion statement. Wrap and cross-front bodices, like the one built into Vogue 7966, offered a flattering, adjustable fit without complex tailoring — a practical answer for home sewists producing their own version of the era's polished daytime dress.
